What is Positive Behaviour Support?
Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is a person-centred approach that helps individuals learn skills, modify their environment, and develop strategies to manage challenging behaviours that may affect their daily life or pose a risk of harm to themselves or others. PBS focuses on promoting positive behaviours, reducing challenging behaviours, minimising the use of restrictive practices and enhancing quality of life by teaching practical skills and adapting supports to meet individual needs.
PBS involves the training of supports to help the implementation of your new individuals support plan.
It is an evidence-based practice that reduces challenging behaviours by understanding the function of the behaviour and teaching new skills and positive behaviours that address the function rather than stopping the behaviour, resulting in long term sustainable outcomes.
PBS is used across a range of settings, including home, school, and community. It is an allied health-informed approach that combines behavioural science, psychology, and person-centered planning to support individuals in achieving greater independence, participation, and well-being.
The term “Positive Behaviour Support” reflects its dual focus on reinforcing meaningful skills while addressing barriers to engagement and participation in daily life.
At Therapy Connect, Positive Behaviour Support is delivered remotely using secure video calls. Online therapy offers a convenient way to access care from the comfort of your own home, whether you live in a remote area or want to avoid travel and long commutes.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get funding for Positive Behaviour Support?
You have two options to get funding for Positive Behaviour Support:
Option 1 (Main Pathway) : Request a Plan Review
You can ask the NDIA for a plan reassessment specifically to add PBS funding. But the NDIA will only add PBS funding if there is evidence of behaviours of concern and a clear link to safety, wellbeing, or participation.
Strong evidence could include a letter or report from a GP, psychologist, psychiatrist, occupational therapist, or support coordinator. The letter could describe behaviours that are unsafe, distressing, or restrictive, the impact on daily life, relationships, housing, or support workers, and any risk of restrictive practices or their current use.
How to request a NDIS plan review:
You, or your nominee or support coordinator, can call the NDIS to request a section 48 plan reassessment or submit a Change of Circumstances form. Be very clear when making the request: “Positive Behaviour Support is required to reduce behaviours of concern and prevent restrictive practices.”
Option 2: You can get interim or short-term PBS approved
Sometimes the NDIA will approve time-limited funding for Positive Behaviour Support, e.g. three to six months, to complete a Behaviour Support Assessment and/or develop a Behaviour Support Plan.
This is more likely if there is an immediate risk, you are at risk of losing housing or supports, or services are refusing support without a Behaviour Support Plan. A support coordinator can strongly advocate for you if you have one.
