Yes, I know this seems like a big statement to make and, of course, delivering speech therapy at 3am if you’re on the International Space Station is going to be a challenge but really, telepractice lets us deliver therapy from anywhere to anywhere as long as there is an Internet connection.
If you live outside of a capital city, you’ll know how challenging it is to get the therapy you need at a time and place that suits you. What we hear is:
“I have to travel one hour to see the psychologist which means half a day off work”.
“I hate my child missing school for speech therapy”
“In our region there is a nine month wait for OT”
“I have two children in the family needing services. How will I fit all of that in”?
So how do you do it?
Therapy Connect works with people who need therapy help and links them up with qualified practitioners. All the therapy is delivered via video conference, which means it can be in your home, at your child’s school or anywhere that suits you.
Having a therapy session at your child’s school means that teachers and aides can be involved and learn first-hand how best to support your child. Having a session in your home means you are in a place where you feel comfortable and there is no travel or hanging around in waiting rooms. We all know how much fun that is!
You pick the time and we will do our best to match it. This means we can be flexible to your work schedules or your child’s routines. No stress, no missing school or work.
It also means your therapist can be anywhere so you get many more options of who you work with. We allocate a therapist who we think will be the best match for you and there are no waiting lists because we can recruit to meet needs.
Is telepractice as good as face-to-face?
Quality telepractice is and that’s what Therapy Connect is good at. We partnered with the University of Sydney in a research project to understand and identify the features of high quality telepractice and we’re a recognised national leader in delivering allied health services with telepractice.
We know it’s important to help you understand and use the technology and we teach our therapists how to adapt their sessions to online delivery. There are other benefits too! It’s a lot easier to share resources and tools on the spot and to record sessions so that you can refer to them later or share them with other family members or people in your support network.
But I’m no good at all that Internet stuff!
You’re not alone there. Sometimes I think my computer is plotting against me! You don’t have to be a tech head with telepractice and we make it as simple and user-friendly as possible. We’ll trial the technology with you before you sign up so that you know what to expect. If you’ve ever used FaceTime or Skype, it’s not too different and we’ll make sure it works for you before you make a commitment.
So what therapies do you deliver?
Our workforce keeps expanding but, at the moment, we can deliver speech therapy, occupational therapy, psychology, physiotherapy and dietetics. We are registered with the NDIS in all states and territories and can work with Support Workers.
